Pepper was bold, intelligent, and incredibly curious. She was a natural explorer and investigator. She was social and loved being the center of attention. She showed affection by grooming and by including us in her investigations. Her personality was engaging and lively—a tiny detective who made the world feel safer by knowing every inch of it.

⭐ Special Memory

Pepper once 'investigated' a house guest who was mildly afraid of rats. The guest was sitting on the couch when Pepper, free-ranging, decided this new person needed a thorough check. She climbed up the guest's pant leg, onto their lap, then up to their shoulder, sniffing intently at their earrings, hair, and collar. She was so gentle and business-like that the guest's fear melted away. By the time Pepper had finished her inspection and settled on their shoulder, the guest was smiling and petting her. Pepper had turned a skeptic into a fan with her professional curiosity.

Pepper, a black Berkshire rat with a white blaze on her chest, was the chief of security. No one and nothing entered the rat room without a thorough sniff-inspection from Pepper. She would climb onto shoulders to investigate hair, glasses, and ears. She would crawl into shopping bags (under supervision) to check contents. Her curiosity was boundless but gentle. She was also the first to learn new tricks, as if showing off for the others. Her absence means new things go unchecked, and the room feels less thoroughly investigated, less secure in a silly, sweet way.
