❤️ Nature & Soul
Sprocket was social, affectionate with his brother, and slightly more observant of the human world. He was the 'greeter,' often coming to the front of the tank when we approached. He was gentle and loved to be handed treats. After Zephyr passed, his personality became quieter, more reflective, though he still enjoyed out-of-tank exploration. He showed the deep, intrinsic need gerbils have for companionship. His personality was intertwined with his brother's—they were two halves of a happy, busy whole.
⭐ Special Memory
After Zephyr passed, we gave Sprocket extra attention. He would sit on our laps and seem to soak up the contact. One afternoon, he was exploring a blanket and found an old, forgotten sock that smelled faintly of his brother (from a previous playtime). He didn't stash it or chew it. He simply dragged it to a corner of the blanket, curled up around it, and fell asleep. It was a heartbreaking and beautiful display of memory and mourning in a tiny creature. We let him keep that sock in his tank for days.
🐾 Favorite Things
Social interaction with brother, gentle wrestling, observing humans, shared burrows, companionship, lap sitting

Honoring the other half of a gerbil duo, whose bond was a seamless dance of play, work, and shared burrows.

Sprocket (named for his brother Zephyr's energy) was the slightly calmer, but no less important, half of the gerbil pair. While Zephyr was the chief excavator, Sprocket was the maintainer and the playful instigator. He would often initiate gentle wrestling matches, rolling and tumbling with his brother in a blur of fur. He was also the one more likely to sit up and watch us, his tiny hands folded over his chest. Their bond was beautiful to witness—they slept curled together, groomed each other meticulously, and shared every discovery. Losing Zephyr first was hard, but Sprocket carried on bravely for a time, though the spark of constant companionship was dimmed. Now, both are gone, and the tank is a monument to a perfect partnership.
