❤️ Nature & Soul
Pebble was cautious, independent, and sweet once she knew you. She was clean and used a litter box with surprising reliability for a hedgehog. She was curious about new smells, especially on hands. She showed trust by unballing quickly, by exploring on a familiar lap, and by eating mealworms from fingers without hesitation (her one great weakness). Her personality was like a closed flower that bloomed slowly—those who were patient were rewarded with glimpses of a unique, quiet character.
⭐ Special Memory
The first time Pebble fell asleep on me was a milestone. After months of careful handling, she was exploring my lap on a fleece blanket. She sniffed around, then, instead of balling up or trying to hide, she simply nestled into a fold of the blanket, let out a tiny sigh, and fell asleep. Her quills lay flat, her breathing was slow. She felt completely safe. That moment of earned trust, of this defensive little creature choosing vulnerability, was one of the most rewarding experiences of pet ownership.
🐾 Favorite Things
Mealworm treats, running wheel at night, fleece-lined igloo, quiet handling, exploring laps, earning trust gradually

A tribute to a hedgehog whose nocturnal forays were conducted with serious purpose, a prickly, quiet companion who unfolded into a soft, trusting heart.

Pebble was a creature of dignified mystery. An African Pygmy Hedgehog with salt-and-pepper quills and a shy nature, her world was nocturnal. Her daytime was spent snoozing in a fleece-lined igloo. At night, she would emerge—a sniffing, snuffling explorer. The initial ball of spines would slowly relax as she grew accustomed to handling, eventually revealing a soft, warm belly and curious face. She loved running on her wheel, the steady *pat-pat-pat* a nightly rhythm. She was not cuddly in a conventional sense, but there was a deep satisfaction in earning her trust, in feeling her uncurl in your hands. Her quiet, serious presence is deeply missed in the night.
