❤️ Nature & Soul
Zephyr was industrious, social, and incredibly active. He was a natural engineer with a clear vision for his underground home. He was curious about everything outside the tank, standing on his hind legs to sniff the air. He was gentle with his brother and with human hands. He showed trust by taking seeds from fingers and by allowing us to watch his construction work without hiding. His personality was lively and engaging—a perfect example of the complex social and physical needs of his species being met, resulting in a happy, busy life.
⭐ Special Memory
The most fascinating thing was setting up a 'gerbilarium' with one side made of clear plastic against the glass. We could watch the entire tunnel network being built from the side. Zephyr was the architect. We saw him dig a main artery, create a sleeping chamber lined with shredded toilet paper, and even a separate 'bathroom' chamber away from the nest. Watching this hidden, intricate world being built before our eyes was better than any documentary. It was a privilege to see his natural behaviors play out in such detail.
🐾 Favorite Things
Deep bedding for tunneling, shredded paper for nesting, social interaction with brother, popcorn jumps, observing from clear-sided tanks

Honoring a gerbil whose life was a constant, energetic excavation, turning his tank into a dynamic landscape of tunnels and mounds.

Zephyr was a force of nature in a 10-gallon tank. A pair of Mongolian gerbils (he and his brother, Bolt), he was the chief engineer. Their deep layer of bedding wasn't just substrate; it was a medium for art. Using his nose, feet, and teeth, Zephyr would create elaborate, interconnected tunnel systems that changed daily. You could see the mounds shift and new entryways appear as he worked. He was a social, playful creature, wrestling gently with his brother and sharing food. Their synchronized popcorn jumps when excited were a sight to behold. The tank is static now, the tunnels collapsed, missing the two sandy blurs that were its heart and soul.
