❤️ Nature & Soul
Slate was intelligent, patient, and possessed a calm confidence. He enjoyed chin rubs and would close his eyes in pleasure. He recognized his people and would come toward our voices. He showed trust by falling asleep in our laps, completely relaxed. His personality was substantial and reassuring—a companion whose very presence was steadying. He was the 'grandfather' of our reptile collection, respected by all (including us).
⭐ Special Memory
Slate had a unique friendship with our elderly dog. The dog was curious but gentle. Slate seemed unbothered. They would often lie near each other in a patch of sunlight on the floor, the dog watching the lizard, the lizard occasionally flicking his tongue at the dog. There was a mutual, respectful curiosity. It was a beautiful, interspecies quiet companionship that defied expectations. We have a cherished photo of them sharing a sunbeam.
🐾 Favorite Things
Dish tapping, chin rubs, sunbeam sharing with dog, waddling patrols

Remembering a blue-tongued skink whose solid, grounded presence was the bedrock of our reptile family, a gentle giant with a surprising flash of color.

Slate was our foundation. His grey-brown, keeled scales looked like stone, and his demeanor was just as solid. He moved with a deliberate, waddling purpose. That brilliant blue tongue was his party trick, and he'd deploy it with dramatic flair when surprised. He was incredibly food-motivated and learned to tap his dish when hungry. His weight in a lap was profoundly comforting. The floor of the reptile room feels less anchored now, missing his slow, sturdy patrols and that sudden, beautiful shock of blue.
