Sahara's Shifting Sands
Life Details
Celebrating a Kenyan sand boa whose life was a secret written in dunes, whose simple, smiling presence was a lesson in contentment.
Sahara was joy, buried. Her world was a 40-gallon desert of soft sand, and she was its happy queen. We'd know where she was by a slight mound or the tip of her tail poking out. When she surfaced, her goofy smile was an instant mood-lifter. Feeding time was a comedy of explosive action followed by glacial swallowing. Holding her was profoundly calming; she was cool, smooth, and completely relaxed, often forming a perfect loop in our hands. The sand is undisturbed now, a blank page missing its happy, hidden story.
