Pumpkin, a beautiful orange rabbit with a white belly, was autumn warmth. Her color was the rich orange of pumpkins, and her nature held that same seasonal comfort. She loved routines that followed the day: morning sunbathing in the east-facing window, afternoon naps in her hidey-house, evening explorations as the light faded. She had a particular fondness for the actual autumn season—when we would bring in safe autumn leaves for her to investigate, she would spend hours sniffing, nibbling, and rearranging them. Our home feels seasonless without her autumnal presence. We miss our living fall, our furry reminder of nature's cycles and comforts.

Pumpkin was seasonal comfort in rabbit form. She was calm, observant, deeply in tune with natural rhythms. She seemed more active in cooler weather, often choosing to nap in sunbeams that warmed her without overheating. She was intelligent in a practical way—she learned the sound of the treat bag and would come hopping, but also seemed to recognize other patterns like meal times and our daily schedules. She was remarkably patient, especially with children, allowing gentle petting and never nipping. She formed a bond with the whole family, but had a special soft spot for my father, often hopping to his chair in the evening. Her personality was like a perfect autumn day: crisp, beautiful, comforting, fleeting in the best way.
⭐ Special Memory
Pumpkin's connection to autumn was most beautiful during what we called 'Pumpkin Day.' Each October, we would get a small sugar pumpkin (safe for rabbits) for her. Pumpkin had a ritual: first, she would circle it, sniffing thoroughly. Then she would gently nibble the stem. Then she would push it around with her nose. Over several days, she would work on it, eating small bits, playing with it, sometimes just sitting beside it. By Halloween, the pumpkin would be a hollowed-out shell with bunny-sized bite marks. We would then carve it (with her safely away) and put a battery candle inside—her own jack-o-lantern. This annual ritual connected us to the season in a new way, watching our orange rabbit engage with her namesake fruit.
🐾 Favorite Things
Pumpkin loved burrowing into piles of fleece blankets in autumn colors—oranges, browns, deep yellows. She adored small pieces of pumpkin (cooked, plain) and would hold them delicately in her front paws. Her favorite thing was stretching out in a patch of autumn sunlight that came through the window at a particular angle, her orange fur glowing like the leaves outside.
