Maple, a tortoiseshell-colored rabbit with patches of orange, brown, and black, was autumn embodied. Her colors shifted in different lights like leaves changing on a tree. But her true beauty was in her gentle, steady nature. She loved routines that followed the day: morning sunbathing in the east-facing window, afternoon naps in her hidey-house, evening explorations as the light faded. She had a particular fondness for the actual autumn season—when we would bring in fallen leaves for her to investigate (from safe, pesticide-free trees), she would spend hours sniffing, nibbling, and rearranging them. Our home feels seasonless without her autumnal presence. We miss our living fall, our furry reminder of nature's cycles.
❤️ Nature & Soul
Maple was seasonal comfort in rabbit form. She was calm, observant, deeply in tune with natural rhythms. She seemed more active in cooler weather, often choosing to nap in sunbeams that warmed her without overheating. She was intelligent in a practical way—she learned the sound of the treat bag and would come hopping, but also seemed to recognize other patterns like meal times and our daily schedules. She was remarkably patient, especially with children, allowing gentle petting and never nipping. She formed a bond with the whole family, but had a special soft spot for my father, often hopping to his chair in the evening. Her personality was like a perfect autumn day: crisp, beautiful, comforting, fleeting in the best way.
⭐ Special Memory
Maple's connection to autumn was most beautiful during what we called 'Leaf Days.' Each fall, we would collect a basket of safe, colorful leaves for her. Maple had a ritual: first, she would hop around the pile, sniffing each leaf type. Then she would select one—usually a bright red or yellow maple leaf—and carry it to her favorite spot. She would then methodically shred it into tiny pieces, occasionally eating a bit, mostly just enjoying the texture and smell. Over several hours, she would work through the pile, leaving a colorful confetti around her area. Watching her engage so thoroughly with this seasonal gift, clearly deriving sensory pleasure from it, connected us to the changing season in a new way. Her enjoyment of simple autumn beauty was contagious.
🐾 Favorite Things
Maple loved burrowing into piles of fleece blankets in autumn colors—oranges, browns, reds. She adored small pieces of apple (a fall fruit) and would hold them delicately in her front paws. Her favorite thing was stretching out in a patch of autumn sunlight that came through the window at a particular angle, her tortoiseshell fur glowing like the leaves outside.
