❤️ Nature & Soul
Driftwood was clumsy on land but transformed in water. He was social, often interacting with pelicans in the wild flock that visited the nearby coast. He had a strong feeding drive. His personality was one of coastal spectacle—a living reminder of the success of the DDT ban (pelicans recovered) and the new threats they face from fishing gear and pollution.
⭐ Special Memory
The most dramatic memory is watching him finally get his diving technique right. For weeks, he'd belly-flop. Then one day, he arched into a proper dive from a low platform, entering the water cleanly. He surfaced with a fish (we'd placed in the pool) in his bill, tipped his head back, and swallowed. The rehab staff cheered. It was a hard-won skill, a step toward potential release.
🐾 Favorite Things
Dive practice, fish catching, preening

Remembering a rescued brown pelican whose spectacular dives and prehistoric bill brought coastal drama to our rehabilitation beach.
Driftwood was found tangled in fishing line with a hook in his pouch, a brown pelican unable to fish. We removed the hook, treated the infection, and housed him in a large beach aviary with a deep pool. He'd practice his dive—a spectacular, clumsy belly-flop from the side of the pool. His giant bill and stretchy pouch were engineering marvels. The aviary is missing the clatter of his bill, the sight of his gangly form preening, and the dramatic, wing-spreading dry after a swim.
