❤️ Nature & Soul
Pebble was industrious, tidy, and a crucial part of the wetland ecosystem. He kept vegetation in check and his burrows helped aerate the soil. He was wary but grew accustomed to quiet observers. His personality was one of quiet, beneficial activity—a small mammal going about its business, contributing to the health of its home, asking only for clean water and freedom from introduced predators like mink.
⭐ Special Memory
The most peaceful memory is watching him through a hide's window. He'd emerge from a burrow entrance right by the water, take a swim to a favorite grazing spot, eat methodically, then swim back. His life was a small, perfect circle of water, grass, and burrow—a model of harmonious riverbank existence.
🐾 Favorite Things
Swimming channels, grass eating, burrow building

Celebrating a rescued water vole whose round body, blunt nose, and riverside life charmed everyone at our wetland reserve.

Pebble was found by a dog, a water vole unharmed but displaced. We released him into a protected wetland on our reserve. He became a regular, recognizable by a small notch in his ear. He'd swim across channels with his head above water, then climb onto the bank to eat grasses, holding them in his front paws. The vole bank is missing the 'plop' of his entry into the water, the sight of him sitting up to eat, and the neat, clipped lawns of grass where he'd been feeding.
