Zephyr was sweet, calm, and surprisingly affectionate for a bovine. He enjoyed having his thick neck scratched. He was curious about everything and would investigate new objects with his nose. His personality was one of gentle giant—a breed built for harsh climates, expressing nothing but softness and a desire for connection.

⭐ Special Memory

The most charming memory is of him as a gangly calf, trying to run on his long legs. He'd buck and kick with clumsy joy, his hair flying, then come skidding to a stop at our feet, looking for approval. He was all awkward energy and trust, a fuzzy testament to the simple happiness of a well-cared-for life.

Remembering a rescued Scottish Highland cow calf whose shaggy coat and gentle demeanor brought a touch of pastoral poetry to our sanctuary.

Zephyr was the runt of the herd, a Scottish Highland calf rejected by his mother on a farm. We bottle-fed him, and he became imprinted, following us like a large, hairy dog. His coat was a magnificent russet red with long, wavy hair and impressive horns that grew slowly. He'd 'moo' deeply when he saw his bottle. The pasture is missing the sound of his contented chewing of cud, the swish of his long hair as he walked, and his gentle nudges for attention or treats.
