❤️ Nature & Soul
Ember was crepuscular, cryptic, and a master of aerial insect hunting. She had a tiny beak but a huge gape for catching insects in flight. She was a bird of the air and the twilight, uncomfortable on the ground. Her personality was one of aerial specialization—a creature that lived at the intersection of day and night, sky and earth.
⭐ Special Memory
The most magical memory is during her release. We took her to a large open field at dusk, when insects were swarming. I opened the carrier. She sat for a moment, then launched into the darkening sky. She began to fly erratically, catching insects invisible to us, her shape merging with the gathering night. She didn't look back; she just became part of the twilight world she belonged to.
🐾 Favorite Things
Dusk flights, insect hunting, camouflage

A tribute to a rescued nighthawk whose cryptic plumage and booming courtship dive brought the magic of twilight to our rehab center.

Ember was found on a city sidewalk, a common nighthawk with a injured wing from a window strike. Her camouflage was perfect—mottled gray and brown that vanished against gravel or bark. We housed her in a large flight cage. Her most remarkable behavior was the male's courtship 'boom' (she was female, but sometimes performed a version), a deep sound created by air rushing through wings during a dive. The flight cage is missing her silent, moth-like flight at dusk, her horizontal posture on a perch (not upright like most birds), and her large, dark eyes adapted for low light.
