❤️ Nature & Soul
Zephyr was all potential energy—fierce, fast, and born to hunt. Even as a chick, he'd 'mantle' over his food, spreading his wings to hide it. He was a creature of air and speed. His personality was one of predatory perfection—the fastest animal on the planet, in recovery, representing a conservation victory.
⭐ Special Memory
The most exhilarating memory is his first free flight after release from the hack box. He burst from the box, climbed on young wings, caught a thermal, and soared. Then he saw a training lure (a dummy on a line) and stooped. Even at his young age, the dive was a blur—a hint of the 200+ mph predator he would become. It was witnessing raw, inherited power awakening.
🐾 Favorite Things
High-speed stoops, cliff perches, flight training

Remembering a rescued peregrine falcon chick whose blazing speed and recovery symbolized the triumph of conservation over pesticides.

Zephyr fell from a cliff nest, a peregrine falcon chick found dehydrated and weak. We raised him with puppets to prevent imprinting and trained him for flight. He was a bird of intense focus and power. His recovery was part of the larger story of his species' comeback from DDT. The hack box (release site) on the canyon rim is empty now, missing the sound of his sharp *kak-kak-kak* calls, the heart-stopping stoop during flight practice, and the fierce beauty of his blue-gray back and barred chest.
