❤️ Nature & Soul
Ember was solitary, strong-willed, and a born excavator. She tolerated her caregivers but made it clear she preferred to be left alone. She was mostly nocturnal. Her personality was one of subterranean independence—a creature of the earth, more at home in a tunnel than above it, living a life dictated by the urge to dig.
⭐ Special Memory
The most awe-inspiring memory is watching her dig. She'd disappear into a hole, and dirt would fly out behind her in a continuous stream. Her powerful front claws were like living shovels. You could hear her snuffling and scratching underground. Then, yards away, she'd pop out of a new entrance, shake off the dirt, and look satisfied. It was pure, unadulterated badgerness.
🐾 Favorite Things
Digging, deep soil, solitary time

No Reminder

Honoring a rescued American badger whose powerful digging and fierce independence made her a formidable and fascinating resident.

Ember was hit by a car as a young adult, an American badger with a fractured pelvis that healed but left her with a limp. She couldn't dig or hunt at full capacity. We gave her an enclosure with deep, soft soil. She'd spend hours excavating, creating elaborate burrow systems that we'd have to periodically fill in for safety. She had a characteristic white stripe down her face and a surprisingly grizzled, beautiful coat. The badger pen is oddly flat now, missing the mounds of fresh dirt, the sight of her low-slung, powerful body emerging from a hole, and her gruff snorts and growls.
