❤️ Nature & Soul
Driftwood was timid, sensitive, and bore the scars of human industry. She used echolocation to navigate her pool. She was not a performer but a living lesson. Her personality was one of oceanic quiet—a small, shy cetacean that asked only for clean, peaceful water, a request increasingly hard for her wild kin to find.
⭐ Special Memory
The most poignant memory is during an ultrasound exam (to monitor her health). She lay still on a mat, supported by her trainers, while the vet worked. Her dark eye watched me, calm and trusting. In that moment of vulnerability, the wild porpoise and the human caregivers were connected by a shared goal: her well-being. It was a powerful, silent bond.
🐾 Favorite Things
Quiet pools, gentle handling, soft swimming

A tribute to a rescued harbor porpoise whose shy nature and tragic entanglement highlighted the plight of cetaceans in human-dominated seas.

Driftwood was found entangled in fishing gear, a young harbor porpoise exhausted and cut by monofilament line. Rescued and brought to a rehabilitation pool, she was too injured to survive in the wild. She became a research and education animal. Her pool was kept dark and quiet, as porpoises are sensitive. She'd swim slow, silent laps, her small dorsal fin cutting the water. The pool is just still water now, missing her soft puff of breath at the surface, her smooth, gray back arching as she dove, and the rare, fleeting eye contact that felt like a profound connection.
