❤️ Nature & Soul
Pebble was secretive, ancient, and an indicator of clean water. He required cold, highly oxygenated, pollutant-free water. He was not interactive but was a powerful educational tool about freshwater health. His personality was one of primordial simplicity—a living fossil that had survived by being perfectly adapted to a specific niche: cold, rocky, Appalachian streams.
⭐ Special Memory
The most fascinating memory is during a tank cleaning. We lifted his favorite rock. There he was, pressed against the bottom, his mottled brown skin making him nearly invisible. He didn't flee, just watched with small, lidless eyes. Holding that rock, with this ancient creature relying on the environment we maintained, was a profound responsibility. He was the health of the stream made flesh.
🐾 Favorite Things
Hiding under rocks, crayfish hunting, cold water

Honoring a rescued hellbender salamander whose cryptic life under rocks and ancient lineage made him a fascinating aquatic ambassador.

Pebble was found injured in a stream during a water quality survey, a giant salamander known as a hellbender. His skin was wrinkled and mucus-covered, perfect for absorbing oxygen from water. We housed him in a large, cold-water stream tank with flat rocks to hide under. He was mostly nocturnal, emerging at night to forage for crayfish. The stream tank is too clear now, missing the occasional glimpse of his flattened body under a rock, the slow wave of his lateral folds as he 'breathed,' and his sudden, surprisingly fast lunge at food.
