❤️ Nature & Soul
Ember was imposing, intelligent, and a creature of routine. He recognized his keepers and would often follow them along the fence line. He was curious about new objects in his environment. His personality was one of monumental survival—a species brought back from the very brink, with each individual, even non-releasable ones like him, representing a victory against extinction.
⭐ Special Memory
The most humbling memory is during a feeding. We'd provide a whole, thawed carcass (like a rabbit or deer). He'd approach with deliberate steps, his powerful beak capable of tearing through hide and bone. Watching him feed was a raw connection to the vital role of scavengers, a reminder that death fuels life in nature's cycle. He was not majestic in that moment, but essential.
🐾 Favorite Things
Sunbathing, cliff perches, carcass feedings

No Reminder

Remembering a rescued California condor whose massive wingspan and critical endangerment status made him a living symbol of conservation hope.

Ember was a captive-bred California condor, part of the recovery program, but with a congenital issue that prevented release. He lived in a huge flight aviary designed to mimic cliffs. His wingspan was staggering—over 9 feet. He'd spend hours sunning, spreading his wings to absorb heat. His bald head, an adaptation for hygiene, gave him a fierce, ancient look. The aviary feels small now, missing the shadow of his wings across the ground, the hisses and grunts he'd make, and the sheer scale of him perched on his high ledge.
