❤️ Nature & Soul
Driftwood was resilient, gentle, and a survivor. He learned to recognize his keepers and would surface when they called. He enjoyed having his shell scratched with a long brush. His personality was one of ancient patience—a creature that should have been crossing oceans, now ambassador for all sea turtles, teaching about the human-caused dangers they face.
⭐ Special Memory
The most moving memory is during a school visit. A child in a wheelchair was brought to the pool's edge. Driftwood swam over, looked at the child, and stayed there, seeming to make eye contact. The child's face lit up. The teacher later said it was the most engaged the child had been all year. In that moment, Driftwood wasn't just a turtle; he was a bridge, connecting a child to the wonder of the natural world.
🐾 Favorite Things
Shell scratches, surfacing for air, gentle interactions

Honoring a rescued loggerhead sea turtle whose ancient, migrating spirit survived boat strike injuries to teach thousands about ocean conservation.

Driftwood washed up with a massive crack in his carapace from a boat propeller, a juvenile loggerhead sea turtle. Surgery repaired the shell with fiberglass and epoxy. He lived in a large, circular saltwater pool while he healed, but nerve damage meant he couldn't dive properly for food. He became a permanent education resident. The pool is calm now, missing the powerful strokes of his flippers, his head breaking the surface for air with a loud *whoosh*, and the gentle nudge he'd give to familiar divers during tank cleanings.
