Ripple was patient, precise, and a solitary hunter. He tolerated care but always kept a wary distance. He'd use tools, sometimes dropping a feather or insect on the water's surface to lure fish. His personality was one of avian concentration—a living lesson in the power of stillness and timing.

The most remarkable memory is watching him fish. He'd not only stand and wait but also actively bait. I saw him break off a small twig, drop it in the water, and watch. When a fish approached to investigate, he struck. It was a documented behavior in herons, but seeing it firsthand was astonishing—clear evidence of avian intelligence and adaptability.

Honoring a rescued green heron whose patient hunting and stunning plumage brought a touch of wetland elegance to our rehabilitation pond.

Ripple was found with a fishing line tangled around his leg, a green heron weakened and stressed. We freed him, treated the wound, and placed him in a large aviary with a pond full of small fish. He was a master of stillness, standing motionless for hours before striking with lightning speed. His plumage was a work of art—greens, blues, and chestnuts that shone in the light. The heron aviary is just a pond now, missing the careful placement of his feet as he waded, the sudden dart of his neck, and the beautiful, awkward flight as he moved from perch to perch.
