❤️ Nature & Soul
Thistle was solitary, beneficial, and full of ancient, insectivorous behaviors. He hibernated in winter in a nest of leaves we provided. He was a gardener's friend, consuming pests. His personality was one of small, spiky independence—a wild creature going about its ancient business of being a hedgehog, with a little human help to survive in a modern world.
⭐ Special Memory
The funniest memory is of him encountering a slice of banana (a treat). He sniffed it, then began anointing—biting it, working up a froth, and contorting to spread the banana-saliva on his spines. He ended up with sticky spikes and seemed very pleased with himself. It was a perfect example of his strange, innate behaviors, performed with complete seriousness.
🐾 Favorite Things
Banana slices, slug hunting, leaf pile explorations
🌈 Pet Remembrance Anniversary Reminders

No Reminder

A tribute to a rescued hedgehog (wild European species) whose nocturnal snuffling and self-anointing rituals were a window into insectivore life.

Thistle was found in a UK garden, a wild European hedgehog underweight and full of parasites. We treated him and, because he was habituated to gardens, gave him a safe outdoor enclosure. He'd emerge at night, snuffling through leaf piles for slugs and beetles. His famous self-anointing—creating frothy saliva to spread on his spines when encountering strong smells—was a bizarre and fascinating ritual. The hedgehog house is empty now, missing the soft rustling of his nightly patrols, the sight of his pointed nose twitching, and the occasional, surprising speed of his waddle when excited.
