Pebble was secretive, industrious, and a master of wetland living. He kept his lodge entrance underwater for safety. He was an important part of the wetland ecosystem, creating habitats for other creatures with his channels and lodges. His personality was one of quiet, efficient wildness—a creature that asked only for a patch of marsh to call home.
⭐ Special Memory
The most peaceful memory is of watching him at dusk through binoculars. He'd emerge from his lodge, swim a few circuits, then climb onto a half-submerged log to eat a cattail stem, holding it in his front paws like corn on the cob. It was a perfect snapshot of wetland life—simple, purposeful, and in harmony with its environment.

Remembering a rescued muskrat whose aquatic life and busy engineering revealed the hidden world of wetland dwellers.
Pebble was caught in a fishing net, a young muskrat struggling and exhausted. We released him into a sanctuary wetland with a bank for burrowing. He was mostly seen at dawn and dusk, swimming with his head low in the water, his tail snaking behind. He built a small lodge from cattails and mud. The wetland is missing the gentle ripple of his swimming, the occasional glimpse of him carrying vegetation in his mouth, and the subtle signs of his reshaping of the bank.
