❤️ Nature & Soul
Mirage was alert, fast, and had a distinct, quirky character. She'd 'sunbathe' by spreading her wings and leaning against warm rocks. She was curious about shiny objects. Her personality was pure desert adaptation—a ground bird built for speed and survival in a harsh landscape, now living a slower but cared-for life.
⭐ Special Memory
The most characteristic memory is watching her hunt a lizard we placed in her enclosure. Despite her limp, she used strategy, herding it against a rock wall with quick, zigzagging runs before striking. It was a display of innate hunting intelligence, a skill burned into her genes, performed even in the confines of captivity.
🐾 Favorite Things
Sun-warmed rocks, hunting lizards, morning cooing sessions

7 days before

Remembering a rescued roadrunner whose ground-speed and quirky personality brought a piece of the Southwest to our rehabilitation center.

Mirage was hit by a car in the desert, a greater roadrunner with a broken leg that healed with a limp. She couldn't chase prey at full speed anymore. We gave her a large, sandy enclosure with rocks and low shrubs. She'd run in sudden bursts, her crest raised, her long tail steering. She'd hunt lizards and insects we provided, dispatching them with swift pecks. The enclosure is too still now, missing the blur of her running, the soft cooing sounds she'd make at dawn, and her curious head-tilts as she watched everything with bright, dark eyes.
