Nova's Starlight Flash
FeaturedLife Details
Remembering a flashing firefly whose brief, glowing life in a specialized terrarium brought wonder to summer nights indoors.
Nova was a captured star. A common eastern firefly (Photinus pyralis), we kept him for just a short time in a large, planted terrarium to observe his bioluminescence. His body was dark with yellow margins, but his true beauty came out at dusk: a controlled, chemical glow from his lower abdomen. We'd feed him sugar water and watch his silent light shows. The jar we used for temporary observation is empty now, missing the magical, intermittent greenish-yellow flashes that lit up a dark room, a private piece of a summer night brought inside.
