❤️ Nature & Soul
Mirage was secretive, fast, and most active during the warm parts of the day. He required very low humidity and high heat. He wasn't a handling pet—too fast and fragile—but was mesmerizing to observe. His personality was one of specialized adaptation. He was a living lesson in evolution for desert life, a creature that had traded legs for flippers in a granular world.
⭐ Special Memory
The most fascinating memory is of watching him 'swim' through the sand for the first time. I had provided deep sand, but wasn't sure he'd use it. The moment he was placed in, he wiggled his body and vanished in seconds, leaving only a slight disturbance on the surface. It was like magic. Later, I'd see a mound move across the tank below the surface—a subterranean journey in a glass box.
🐾 Favorite Things
Fine sand, burrowing, surface eruptions, side-to-side skittering, warm temperatures

Celebrating a sandfish skink whose swimming motion through sand and comical face made him a fascinating desert dweller.

Mirage was a submarine for arid lands. A sandfish skink with a sleek, shiny body and a face that seemed perpetually smiling, he was built for 'swimming' through loose sand. In his enclosure of fine, dry sand, he'd dive beneath the surface with a wriggling motion, leaving only a faint trail before popping up elsewhere. His above-ground movements were a rapid, side-to-side skitter. The sandbox is still and trackless now, missing the sudden eruptions of sand as he surfaced, the sight of just his head poking above the substrate, and his joyful burrowing after feeding.
