Pebble was persistent, hardy, and surprisingly personable for a reptile. She'd come when called (in tortoise time) for strawberry treats. She enjoyed having her neck scratched gently. Her personality was one of gentle determination. In a fast world, she was a testament to the power of slow, steady progress and simple pleasures: sun, food, and a safe burrow.

⭐ Special Memory

The most charming memory is of her 'racing' a snail. One rainy day, a snail was on the path in front of her. Pebble approached, they seemed to regard each other (or not), and then continued on their parallel, ultra-slow courses. It was a comic scene of relativity—the lightning-fast tortoise and the slower snail, both traversing their world at a pace we humans rarely appreciate.

She'd methodically graze on weeds—dandelions were a favorite—then bask on a flat rock until her internal battery was charged. Her adventures in the secure backyard were epic in slowness: a journey from the rosemary bush to the lavender patch could take all afternoon. The garden is missing the soft *shush-shush* of her shell moving through grass, the sight of her stretching her neck to reach a particularly tasty leaf, and her predictable retreat to her heated house at dusk.
