❤️ Nature & Soul
Pogo was shy, fastidious, and crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk). She required specialized care—low-stress handling, a specific diet, and deep substrate for digging. She wasn't cuddly, but observing her natural behaviors was rewarding. Her personality was one of wild caution tempered by captive-born comfort. She was a bridge to a lesser-known part of the animal kingdom, a specialist in her own right.
⭐ Special Memory
The most delightful memory is of watching her 'dig' her nighttime burrow. In deep sand, she'd use her front paws in a rapid, alternating motion, throwing sand behind her with impressive force. Within minutes, she'd disappear into a tunnel, only to pop out another entrance later. It was innate behavior performed with perfect skill, a window into the life of a creature evolved for arid, sandy environments.
🐾 Favorite Things
Sandy substrate, deep digging, upright sitting, nocturnal hopping, cat-like grooming

Honoring a springhare whose powerful hind legs and nocturnal hops made her a fascinating glimpse of African wildlife in captivity.

Pogo was a kangaroo's miniature cousin. A South African springhare with large eyes, big ears, and enormously powerful hind legs, she was built for bouncing. In her large, sandy enclosure, she'd hop rapidly on all fours or sit upright to eat, holding food in her delicate front paws. Her nocturnal activities were a soft *thump-thump-thump* as she moved about. The room is too still now, missing the sight of her grooming her soft fur with cat-like precision, the sound of her digging in her sandbox, and her alert, upright poses when something caught her interest.
