❤️ Nature & Soul
Nibbles was industrious, social, and brilliantly clever. He could solve simple puzzles for treats within minutes. He was vocal, with different sounds for alarm, contentment, and excitement. He enjoyed human interaction but on his terms—often taking offered treats then immediately turning to incorporate them into a building project. His personality was like a tiny, furry CEO—always busy, always planning, always in motion.
⭐ Special Memory
The most impressive memory is of the 'Great Tube Network.' I gave Nibbles several new cardboard tubes. Over one weekend, he connected them to his existing structure, creating a multi-level labyrinth that included a 'bedroom' lined with stolen fleece scraps and a 'pantry' stocked with oat hoards. Watching him zip through his creation with purposeful pride was witnessing pure, unadulterated animal ingenuity. He was a master of his microenvironment.
🐾 Favorite Things
Popsicle sticks, shredded paper, food caches, exercise wheel, cardboard tubes

Celebrating a degu whose boundless energy and architectural genius turned a simple cage into a complex kingdom of tunnels and stashes.

Nibbles was a furry engineer. A Chilean degu with agouti fur and a tufted tail, he approached life as a series of projects to be organized. His enclosure was a masterpiece of shredded paper tunnels, hidden food caches, and carefully arranged bedding. He'd spend hours rearranging popsicle sticks, stopping only for frantic wheel runs or social grooming sessions with his cage mate. The rodent room is too orderly now, missing the constant rustling of construction projects, the soft 'chirrup' conversations, and the sight of him sitting upright, tiny hands full of bedding, surveying his domain.
