For Rusty, the jingle of car keys was the starting bell for an adventure. He was the world's best co-pilot, sitting proudly in the passenger seat, head out the window, navigating by scent. He didn't care if we were going to the mountains or the market; the journey with his pack was the point. He taught us to see the ordinary through eyes of wonder, to find excitement in the simple act of going. This memorial is for all the miles we shared, the roads we traveled, and the faithful companion who made every trip better.
❤️ Nature & Soul
Rusty was bright, energetic, and deeply bonded to his herd (us). He was a working dog at heart, needing a job, which he defined as keeping his family together and on the move. He was intensely smart, learning commands after one or two repetitions. He was communicative, using purposeful nudges and direct eye contact to make his wants known. His loyalty was active and engaged, a partnership rather than just companionship.
⭐ Special Memory
On a road trip, we got hopelessly lost on backcountry roads. Frustrated, we pulled over. Rusty, who had been sleeping, perked up, went to the window, and started whining softly while staring down a specific dirt road. On a whim, we took it. Twenty minutes later, we found a main highway. Whether it was luck or his legendary sense of direction, in that moment, he was the guide, and we never doubted him again.
🐾 Favorite Things
Rusty loved herding. He would gently circle the children in the yard, keeping his 'flock' contained. He was obsessed with chasing laser pointers, his focus absolute. His favorite thing was riding in the car with the windows down, his fur rippling in the wind, acting as the official scout for all of life's adventures.
