Onyx was a wild friend, not a pet. A large, sleek American Crow, he began visiting our backyard after we put out unsalted peanuts. Over two years, he grew accustomed to us, landing on the fence when we were outside. He recognized our car and our voices. He brought 'gifts'—shiny bottle caps, a lost earring, a smooth stone—leaving them on the patio table. We couldn't touch him, but we had a relationship built on quiet respect and peanuts. His intelligence was palpable in his gaze. When he stopped coming, we felt the loss of a unique, wild connection. This memorial is for our corvid friend, who reminded us that friendship can cross species lines without ever needing a cage.
❤️ Nature & Soul
From our observations, Onyx was cautious, intelligent, and surprisingly social for a wild corvid. He had distinct calls for our family versus other crows. He exhibited problem-solving skills, figuring out how to pry lids off containers. He was playful, sometimes sliding down our gently sloping metal roof. He showed clear trust, allowing us to be much closer than other humans. We perceived him as a thoughtful, curious, and loyal wild individual.
⭐ Special Memory
The day Onyx brought his fledgling. In early summer, he arrived with a scruffy, begging young crow. He led the awkward youngster to the patio table where we put peanuts, cawed softly, and watched as the fledgling ate. He then ate a few himself. It felt like an introduction—like he was trusting us with his family. It was the deepest honor of our unusual friendship.
🐾 Favorite Things
Onyx had a clear preference for in-shell peanuts over any other food. He loved bathing in our large, flat birdbath, splashing vigorously. His favorite 'game' seemed to be dropping pebbles onto our metal patio table to hear the 'clink,' then cocking his head to listen.
