Sentinel took his name seriously. A stately Blue-Fronted Amazon, he considered it his duty to monitor all comings and goings. From his large cage in the living room, he had a view of the front door and the driveway. He would whistle a specific 'All clear' tune for family members, but unleash a raucous alarm cry of 'HELLO! HELLO! WHO'S THERE?!' for strangers or delivery people. He wasn't just noisy; he was discerning. His presence made us feel protected. The house now feels exposed, vulnerable in its quiet. This memorial is for our feathered watchman, whose loud love took the form of vigilant care.
❤️ Nature & Soul
Sentinel was bold, confident, and deeply loyal to his 'flock' (our family). He was naturally suspicious of strangers and took time to warm up to new people. He had a great sense of humor, laughing uproariously at slapstick comedy and making jokes. He was highly intelligent and needed lots of interaction and toys to prevent boredom. He could be moody, especially during hormonal seasons, but his default was a cheerful, observant guardian. He expressed affection through loud greetings, accepting head scratches, and wanting to be near the action.
⭐ Special Memory
One evening, a bat found its way into the house, causing panic. As we ran for a broom, Sentinel, from his covered cage, began shrieking a specific alarm call we'd never heard before—a sharp, repetitive 'DANGER! DANGER!' He continued until the bat was safely ushered out, then let out a long, low wolf-whistle as if to say, 'Well done.' It was astonishing proof that he wasn't just mimicking; he was observing, categorizing, and communicating about real-world events.
🐾 Favorite Things
Sentinel loved destroying thick wooden blocks; the louder the crack, the better. He enjoyed dancing to mariachi music, bobbing his head rhythmically. His favorite thing was showering with a spray bottle; he'd spread his wings, fluff up, and say 'Ahhhhh' as he got misted.
