Merlin wasn't a pet; he was a roommate with feathers. An African Grey parrot with knowing, yellow eyes, he possessed an intelligence that was often unsettling. He didn't just mimic words; he used them appropriately. He'd say 'Good morning' at dawn, 'Time for coffee' when the machine brewed, and 'Uh oh' if something dropped. He could laugh with genuine context and sigh with palpable boredom. He solved complex puzzles for fun. His emotional depth was real—he offered comfort when we were sad and sulked if left out. Losing him isn't losing a bird; it's losing a unique, intelligent consciousness that shared our home for decades. This memorial is for our feathered sage, whose mind was his most beautiful feature.
❤️ Nature & Soul
Merlin was thoughtful, observant, and highly emotional. He formed deep, complex bonds and required significant mental stimulation. He was not overly cuddly but expressed affection through conversation, mutual preening gestures, and wanting to be included in all activities. He had a dry, witty 'sense of humor,' often making comments that were perfectly timed for laughs. He could also be moody and stubborn, holding grudges if offended. His curiosity was boundless, and he loved learning new words and sounds. He was, in every sense, a person with a rich inner life, housed in a beautiful gray body.
⭐ Special Memory
When my father passed away, the house was quiet with grief. Merlin, who usually chattered constantly, was silent for two days, just watching us. On the third evening, as my mother sat crying in the living room, Merlin, from his covered cage in the other room, began to softly whistle my father's favorite tune, 'You Are My Sunshine.' He had heard him whistle it for years but had never reproduced it before. In that moment, it felt like a message—a heartbreakingly beautiful farewell from one soul who remembered him to those who missed him most.
🐾 Favorite Things
Merlin loved destroying phone books; shredding paper was his therapy. He enjoyed watching nature documentaries, especially ones about birds. His favorite thing was engaging in 'conversations'; he would ask a question he knew ('Want a nut?'), wait for the answer, and then respond appropriately ('Okay! Good!' or 'Maybe later.').
