Blaze was a temporary treasure. Found injured on the garden path, this tiny Anna's Hummingbird with a throat that flashed ruby fire became a week-long miracle in our care. In a small recovery cage, he was a pulsating jewel—a heart beating visible in his chest, wings a blur even at rest. Feeding him nectar from a syringe, we witnessed a fragility and ferocity unlike anything else. His spirit was indomitable; even weak, he would posture and chirp defiance. His recovery flight, a sudden zip upward into the oak tree, was a burst of pure, iridescent life. This memorial is for our wild, fleeting friend, who allowed us a glimpse into a world of lightning-fast beauty and left as suddenly as he arrived.
❤️ Nature & Soul
Even in his injured state, Blaze's personality was one of fierce, wild pride. He was not tame, and we respected that. He tolerated care with a sort of regal indignation, watching us with sharp, black eyes that missed nothing. His energy was frantic and focused—a pure survival drive. When he began to recover, his true nature emerged: impossibly fast, curious about red colors, and possessing a surprising, loud chirp for such a tiny creature. Interacting with him was to interact with pure, untamed wildness—humbling and exhilarating.
⭐ Special Memory
The moment of release. After a week of care, Blaze was strong, buzzing angrily in his temporary enclosure. We took him to the garden, opened the door, and held our breath. For a second, he perched on the threshold, turning his head to look at the syringe feeder one last time. Then, with a whirring buzz that vibrated in our chests, he launched—not just flew, but *exploded* upward in a shimmering green streak, landing high in the oak tree. He sat for a full minute, preening, as if to say he was fine. Then he was gone. That moment of successful return to the wild was a pure, joyous ache.
🐾 Favorite Things
While in care, Blaze showed a clear preference for the color red, investigating anything red nearby. He loved perching on a specific thin, bare twig in his enclosure. His favorite thing, of course, was the sugar-water nectar; he would feed eagerly, his long tongue flicking in and out, and then sit very still, digesting, his throat feathers glowing.
